The Key Stage 1 English curriculum aims to build a solid foundation in literacy, fostering a love for reading and writing while equipping students with essential communication skills for their future education. Course details

1 . Reading

  • The focus: Understanding and enjoying texts.
  • Teaching content: 
    • Identifying main ideas, predicting what might happen next, and discussing characters and settings. 
    • Listening to and discussing a wide range of texts, including stories, poems, and non-fiction. 
    • Discussing the meaning of words and how they fit within context.
    • Students will learn through exposure to classic and modern literature. 

2. Writing

  • Transcription
    • Students practice spelling words correctly, including high-frequency words and words with common spelling patterns. 
    • They learn about the use of capital letters and punctuation marks. The concept of prefixes and suffixes (e.g., -ed, -ing, un-) and the use of them will be introduced.
  • Composition 
    • Writing simple narratives and recounts.
    • Writing for different purposes (e.g., letters, stories, instructions).
    • Planning writing by discussing ideas and sequencing sentences.
    • Re-reading and editing work for sense and accuracy.
    • Speaking and Listening
    • Students are encouraged to participate in discussions, express their ideas clearly, and listen to others. They learn to ask questions and respond appropriately. Activities often include role-play, storytelling, and presentations to develop confidence in speaking.
  • Grammar and Punctuation
    • Students are introduced to basic grammatical concepts, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and simple sentence structures. They learn to use punctuation such as full stops, question marks, and exclamation marks.
